  1. What is Hosting?
    This is when a user has his/her website on someone else's servers. E.g. a user may register a domain with Network Solutions, and then place his/her website with Surfglobe Internet Technologies. Then his/her website is said to be hosted at Surfglobe.

  3. Why do I need it?
    If you wish to have your website seen by users 24 hours a day, then it must reside on a server which is connected to the Internet 24hrs a day, such as Surfglobe Servers
  4. Is the hosting on NT or on Linux?
    The hosting is on NT Only.
  5. Are FTP details supplied, so that I can upload my site?
    If you have taken webspace from us, your FTP username/password will be emailed to you.
  6. Is the space used by my database part of the overall space that I purchase?
    Yes.
  7. I can't Login to upload my site.
    You will have three types of login
    a) A 16 number username, this is for maintenance, creating emails.
    b) A POP username/password combination. This is for retrieving emails
    c) A FTP username/Password. This is used to upload files
  8. Do you support SSL?
    Currently we do not support SSL, or offer hosting on Secure Servers. It can be made available on Special Requests.
  9. What is the guaranteed uptime of your server?
    98.5% over the course of the year.
  10. Where are your servers hosted?
    All our servers are hosted in various parts of World including India, United Kingdom, Africa, USA etc.. This provides faster access for sites, from anywhere in the World.
  11. What is your bandwidth like?
    This is a difficult question, since our bandwidth changes constantly. We have a simple principle to monitor our bandwidth, and maintain a 10-15% buffer. Once this is breached, we endeavor to increase our bandwidth.
  12. Do you offer telnet service?
    No, you cannot telnet to our servers, and we will not be providing this service.
  13. Can I increase my webspace at anytime?
    Yes just email us, and we will increase your webspace.
  14. What are your costs, for MS Access, MSSQL etc?

  15. Can I host more than one website under my webspace?
    No, we can point as many domains as you require to your webspace, but we will not point domains to subdirectories under that webspace.
  16. What is the difference in MS-Access and MS-SQL database hosting as far as the price is concerned and the no of users that can log on at a time?
    The difference is primarily the cost. There is no limit on the number of users who can logon, how ever if your site is very heavily used and there is a lot of querying of the database, then please try to use MSSQL. Besides MSSQL is said to have a higher level of security than MS-Access
  17. Can MP3 files be hosted on our server, is there any extra charge for the load our servers will bear for the download requests?
    Yes they can as long as they are legal. We reserve the right to close any site which we find to contain copied, or illegal material, e.g. pictures, software, sound files.
  18. Do we have Real Audio and Video Support?
    Yes we do, as long as your are referring to pseudo real audio, i.e. using .ram, .rm. files etc. We currently do not have a real audio server, how ever we will be installing one in the near future.
  19. What is the difference between file DSN and Server DSN and what are the charges?
    The charges are not different, it is simply down to the user, how he/she designs their site.
  20. What are the charges for providing a Site Statistics?
    We Provide a Full Fledged, Counter System, Which Enables a User to view Hits, Statistics, Browsers, & Much Much More, This Facility is Available on Special Request at an extra cost.
  21. Do you provide access logs?
    Yes we do, and we provide them only on a monthly basis. But you have to inform about avail of this facility.
  22. Can I maintain my own site after you have configured it?
    Yes you can upload, change your webpages, etc as often as you like. In fact once we have created the webspace, and registered your domain, we do not actually do anything else to your site.
  23. What do you mean by data transfer/month?
    This is simply the number of Bytes, which have been transferred from your website over the period of one month. This does NOT include any Bytes that have been transferred while you have FTP to or from your website. Only when access is made via your website.
  24. Data storage requirements, how will it be done and can we maintain our own database?
    We simply create you database here, and then you remotely manage it, using one of the various DB clients, e.g. MSSQL client, to link to your DB on our servers.
  25. What is a host?
    A host is simply a machine. A domain name is like a street name. To point to a particular house, we need to add the hostname to is, e.g. www, ftp, to form the FQDN (Fully qualified domain name) www.thedomainname.com
  26. What is the process involved in web hosting?
    Firstly, you need to get a domain, and then buy some webspace. After this is done, design a website, and upload it to the server.
  27. What is Virtual Domain? Non - Virtual Domain?
    A virtual domain, is one which looks as if it is hosted on it's own SERVER, but is not, a non-virtual domain is simply hosted on a machine on its own, with no other websites on it. To do the latter you would have to co-locate your own server on our network.
  28. What is mirroring of the server?
    This usually applies to websites, where the website is mirrored across two countries. If users come from country A, they will go to the server near them. It's basically creating a mirror image of a website on another server.
  29. What is Pointing to the Server?
    This is when a domain is registered in one place e.g. Surfglobe, and uses there name servers, but the website is hosted elsewhere. Hence the www.yourdomain.com record has to be POINTED to that server
  30. What do I call the first page of my site?
    Please call the homepage index.html / index.htm / index.asp or default.htm (on NT)
  31. What type of servers do you host?
    We host Only NT servers. If you wish to have any other OS, then you can opt for our co-locating services. Refer to Surf Servers.
  32. How much space does a static page take?
    Each character takes approximately 1byte. To see the size of the page, just right click on it, and go to properties (in Windows). If you have images on it then please add up the total of all these images also. The Same applies in case of other files, such as ASP, etc.
  33. Can I host my web pages in the free web space offered by some other agencies?
    Sure, just tell us where to re-point or forward your domain. This will mean that the URL in the browser will change as soon as the redirection has occurred. In other words, your domain name will not show up in the location bar once the user is looking at the site.
  34. Will your server accept credit card transactions?
    Yes,,, Very Shortly,,, But We can arrange it if your requirement is Urgent.
  35. Do the hosting charges include your mirrored servers?
    No
  36. Will you be giving me a separate server if I pay extra for it?
    Yes, we offer co-location services. Refer to Surf Servers.
  37. How can I measure or study about my visitors?
    We provide users who have a domain name with us access logs on a monthly basis on Special Requests.
  38. Does your Server support Live Video?
    We do not offer this service as yet.

    We do not offer this service as yet.
  40. Is it necessary to do designs through you since I am taking space from you?
    No, feel free to design the site yourself, or from any other design house. We also provide designing services at minimal cost. Refer to Surf Design
  41. Is design inclusive of programming?
    When we quote for a site, we will include the programming costs as additional, even though it forms the overall design of the site
  42. Does the design include content development?
    Yes, we do provide content for the site at an Extra Cost. We can create the images, page layout etc. aswell.
  43. What language do you use for Design?
    The majority of the website is done in HTML. If programming is required we will do it in ASP, or any other we find suitable, unless the customer has a particular preference.
  44. How can I incorporate Chat Facility?
    You will have to purchase a chat server, and then install it on your site. We do not provide a chat server at present
  45. How will you charge for the man-hours or for the pages?
    In website design we charge per page, for the HTML markup and design, we charge per-man hour that is if any programming has been done.
  46. Are your Charges inclusive of Web Strategy and Consulting?
    No, consulting for a web site is extra, and it also depends on the level of Consultation offered.
  47. Do you support hosting the web-site developed using JSP?
    Currently not supported.
  48. What are your charges for registering to various search engines?

  49. What are the formalities and charges for up gradation to higher packages e.g. Economy package?
    You can upgrade by simply sending a DD, and informing us by email/telephone/fax.
  50. Are there any additional charges that you foresee for us to incur once the web-site is hosted ?
    That all depends on what you add to your website. If you opt for a DB then that is charged extra e.g. Server administration charges, startup/shutdown/back-up charges? We admin the server, unless you co-locate your own server with us.

    There are many helpful sites on the web, which will guide you through designing a webpage. Please go to your favorite search engine, e.g. www.google.com and search for HTML guide.
